This was a tough race. It was fairly flat but there were some gradual uphills and gradual downhills, but according to my Garmin, more uphill than downhill. Also, it seemed unusually humid this morning. I really felt like I struggled the first four miles, and through mile 8. I tried to pick up the pace and maintain a good pace through the last mile.

I don't know what the official results will be like because they did not use timing chips.

According to my Garmin, my overall pace was 9:47.

Splits were: 9:41, 9:34, 9:48, 10:24, 9:18, 9:54, 9:34, 10:15, 10:05, 9:18

I'm really tired now. I'd like to take a nap.

Great pace! Awesome job! You deserve that nap! Maybe the hills got you and that would explain the bit of slow down towards the end. And the warm weather of course - that is a speed killer. Congratulations on a good summer race.

Part of me is jealous that you have hills (as you know, these cornfields are flat!), but then I remember how hard they are, especially during a race.

It looks like your first 3 miles were pretty good, even though you said you struggled through the first 4!

I'm impressed.

What other races do you have coming up?

From Carolyn on Tue, Sep 02, 2008 at 12:15:21

Yes, I remember how flat your part of Illinois is. The only hill I can remember is the freeway overpass. I saw an add for a marathon in Champaign a while ago and I thought I should go do it because it's so flat there, but the travel would probably cost me too much.

I felt like I struggled the first 4, even though looking back I didn't do too badly on the first 3. I just never really felt good until the 5th mile and that good feeling didn't really last.

I'm planning to do a small local 5K on September 13, and then there's a trail run of either 5 miles or 10 miles on October 11. I'll probably do the 10 miles, but I haven't decided yet. It's part of the same small local series as the September 13 race. That's the extend of my race plans for the remainder of the year, but I'm fairly easily persuaded to do more if I found out about more. I'll probably try to find something on Thanksgiving, but I'm not aware of anything at this point.

AWESOME!!!! You're doing great!!! That's an excellent pace to maintain for 10 miles!! I don't think we felt the humidity down here, but I know it can wreak havoc when you're running. Great race!!

By the way, I never responded to your e-mail. Ooops. I actually can't join you on the 13th because there's a RS function that I committed to attend. But, the October 11th 5 or 10 miler look tempting. Where are they?

From Carolyn on Tue, Sep 02, 2008 at 13:46:18

The October 11th races start and end at Rocky Heights Middle School, which is in the southern part of Highlands Ranch. You can find information about the races here:

It would be great to meet you and race together.
