6:30 AM: Fartlek Run. 2 miles warm-up, then 30 sec. @ 5K pace every 3 minutes. Average pace: 9:16.

Weather: 62° F, 50% humidity, wind 6-12 WSW.

I felt sluggish when I got up this morning and when I started the run. I considered cutting the run short. But then I felt better once I got warmed up. This is pretty typical for me.

The temperature and humidity were pleasant this morning, but the wind was a factor, especially since a got portion of my run was going either south or west. My hat blew off during one of my fast intervals, so I paused my watch and picked it up and then resumed. I had to hold on to my hat to keep it from blowing off several other times.

I won't bore you by listing my pace on all 25 intervals, but suffice it say that on the 30 sec. @ 5K pace sections, I was around 7:15, with a few off them too fast and down into the sixes.

I'm wondering whether these all hills all the time courses I'm more or less obliged to run are wearing on me and whether I should do some of my interval workouts on the track. I've got ladder intervals on Thursday. Should I do them on the track?

My husband and 75% of my kids left for Utah this morning. My husband is coming back tomorrow and is leaving the kids there.

**Edited to Add**

My husband called me when I had about a mile left to run and told me they were in the car and were ready to go. I told them to wait for me and told them what street I was on. They came looking for me. When they finally found me I was on our street and was almost home. The 2 boys jumped out of the car and started running with me. They 14-year-old ran ahead because my easy pace was too slow for him since he was only running about 50-100 yards. The 12-year-old stuck with me and I told him that I was on my cool down or easy pace or something like that and he said it wasn't easy to him. They both thought it was really cool to run with me for a little bit. Maybe this will make them want to run with me more.

6:30 PM: 4 miles recovery run. Average pace: 10:23. Weather: 79°F, 29% humidity, winds calm. This run was solidly in my recovery pace range from my McMillan pace chart, which is about what I could handle. Last time I ran in the evening I ran after dinner and that didn't feel so good in the tummy, so tonight I ran first thing when I got home from work and put off dinner until after the run. I could do this because the only family member home with me is my 17-year-old son, who likes to eat dinner late. I don't think I'll be able to do it this way once the whole family is back unless I manage to get home from work earlier, which would require that I get to work earlier, which would require that I run earlier in the morning, which would require that I wake up earlier, which would require that I go to bed earlier, and that's hard to do when my family is home.

75%? That for some reason is cracking me up :)

I have lots of hills too, I like them. Flat is supposed to be good for us too :( Maybe a track is a very good idea. One day a week shouldn't kill you ;D "Poor Carolyn died after running on a track. She tripped over the flatness and then eventually passed away out of boredom." :D -I need to get off the computer and do some laundry before I make more strange jokes.

Oh- I asked my kids if the pipe band members are more or less geeky then the regular bend members. They said that they aren't more or less geeky, just WAY more random. I think "random" may be the new "geeky". They sure are confident! ;D

Pipe band? What is a pipe band?

You're very random today, Marion! ;)

From marion on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 12:00:48 from 71.219.57.176

Bagpipes :) Remember- my girls are bagpipers?

Try them on the track! Maybe you won't be bored to death. I like the track workouts with other people, but can never, ever (well, hardly ever) do it on my own. You seem to have more self discipline than I, however!

If 75% of my kids left, I'd have a mess.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 12:09:13 from 71.229.164.25

Oh yeah. Sorry.

From jun on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 12:16:57 from 66.239.250.209

Nice workout today. I don't think anyone on this site would ever question your discipline. The track might be good for you because it will give you a more consistent workout, if your focus is something like Fartleks. Good luck.

From Snoqualmie on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 12:16:58 from 67.171.56.164

Do you put your pony tail through the hole at the back? That's one strategy I use. The other is just cinching it up. But our hurricane season is over now so I can let my skull breath.

I agree that the intervals on the track sound easier.

Marion- piper kids, how cool! Mr. Sno and I play a lot of Scottish music together. It's how we met actually.

From JD on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 12:17:40 from 166.203.239.236

You sure run a lot Carolyn! I like going to the track once in awhile. It's a nice change and the surface is easy on the legs.

Marion - thanks for the laugh. You're funny! "...she tripped on the flatness and eventually died of boredom."

From marion on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 12:26:37 from 71.219.57.176

Sno- What do you play? Have you ever come out to the Scottish festivals in utah? There is a big one in our town this weekend. I love the pipes.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 13:33:56 from 198.241.217.15

Sno, I put my pony tail through the hole in the hat, but it still blew off. I wear the hat mainly to keep my hair out of my face and for a little shade, not for warmth or protection from rain.

We have a Scottish festival here too, in the Fall I think. You could both come for a visit, Marion and Sno, and anyone else who wants to.

From Snoqualmie on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 14:23:54 from 67.171.56.164

Our Highland Games days are over, or maybe just suspended until child rearing is finished and we have our own time back. I play harp and Mr. Sno plays fiddle. We call it violin when he plays in the orchestra, lol. We are playing for a big Scottish wedding next weekend. No pipes that I know of.

How long will the children be gone? I am sure you will miss them, but sounds like a mini-vacation as well? When do you go on the trek?

Great run today!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:54:16 from 198.241.156.7

Not having to deal with all the kid issues will be a mini vacation, but I sound like a horrible mom to say that.

They come back the day I leave on the trek. They are coming back with their grandparents who are coming to stay while we go on the trek. That's Wednesday next week. The kids, including my son, leave on the Trek on Thursday, but we food committee people are going up a day early.

From Bonnie on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 15:57:34 from 128.196.228.134

I don't think you sound like a horrible Mom at all. They are happy with Grandfolks, why shouldn't you be happy too?

Enjoy the rest.

My girls have gone in August before to some ranch out near denver. Is that the one? We'd love to come :)

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 19:50:59 from 198.241.156.7

I have no idea, Marion. I've actually never been to the Scottish festival myself. I've just seen signs about it. I'd have to do some research to find out more about it.

From JD on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 21:52:44 from 166.128.154.150

We both ran a double today. But wait there's more, our temperature and humidity were EXACTLY the same on each of our 2nd runs! Weird.

Nice miles today. Please tell me tomorrow is an easy day for you.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 22:01:28 from 71.229.164.25

That's freaky about the weather, JD.

Tomorrow is 8 miles easy plus hill sprints. I'm debating whether to knock it down to 6 miles and whether to skip the hill sprints. I'll have to see how I feel.

From Metcalf Running on Tue, Jul 07, 2009 at 22:46:02 from 97.126.146.56

Carolyn always talks like she will take it easy, but 9 times out of 10 when she says that she ends up doing her original plan LOL

From april27 on Wed, Jul 08, 2009 at 09:51:37 from 99.188.251.180
