Easy run + 10 x 8 sec. hill sprints. Average pace: 10:23.

Weather at 6:30 am: 53°F, 28% humidity, very WINDY.

Too long since 3 day rest + not eating so swell the last few days + not enough sleep + wind = tired legs. I really struggled through today's run and went slower than the average pace would indicate for the first half or so when I was going into the wind. Of course the wind was from the southwest, and a huge portion of my run was going south and then going west. I did speed up a little once I started heading north and had the wind behind me, and that brought my average pace down a bit.

I went out and bought the March issue of Running Times yesterday. It has an article by Brad Hudson about hill sprints. Because of what it said in that article, I walked down the hill between hill sprints today, whereas I used to jog down. And I wasn't terrifically fast on my hill sprints. I was tired. I need to decide whether I really want to do ladder intervals tomorrow. I've never done ladder intervals before, and I don't want to skip them. Maybe I'll do them, but do them slower than prescribed.

Still keep your chin up--you're doing great! You're allowed to be tired--it's just important that you're out there doing what you're doing.

It's also important that you're modifying what you do based on the advice you get--sometimes that's hard. You are sometimes hard on yourself when you don't need to be! I'm glad to hear that you changed your hill sprint mentality after reading Hudson's article.

Hopefully you find yourself with more energy tomorrow!

I had almost the exact same experience as you this morning. The southwest wind was brutal. I also ran out into the wind and had a tailwind on the way back. Also I was feeling tired out today, my legs had no life in 'em. I always take that as a good sign that my body has been pushed and is rebuilding stronger!

Thanks for the positive spin on our shared struggle, JD.

Tracy, thanks for your encouragement.

Great run today... I was thinking of you this morning as I ventured out in the dark... yes I ran before work today. Anyway I did three hill sprints, well I think they were more hill repeats, sprints would have had to be faster :)

I'll be interested in the ladder intervel workout, sounds interesting.

From Tracy on Wed, Mar 04, 2009 at 13:52:57 from 209.175.177.37

Do you do your hill sprints scattered throughout the run? Or do you do them after you have completed the run?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, Mar 04, 2009 at 13:55:05 from 198.241.156.7

I do then all together after an easy run.

Great information about hill sprints. I am planning a day of those next week, so that will be helpful.

If I might ask, how long is the hill?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Wed, Mar 04, 2009 at 16:09:58 from 198.241.217.15

It doesn't really matter how long the hill is as long as it is long enough to last you the duration of your hill sprint. My hill sprints are currently 8 seconds (remember that hill sprints are very short - not like hill repetitions) and I get about half-way up the hill that I use in that time. I could use a longer or shorter hill provided the grade was appropriate and it took 8 seconds or more to reach the top of it.

Gotcha. Valuable info.

You know what's annoying?

CENTRAL ILLINOIS HAS NO HILLS!

I'm thinking about this for my XC team, but we don't have a single rise in elevation where we practice. In the past whenever we have hill workouts, we've gone off site, but I have so many kids, that's getting harder to do. I like the concept here for strength training, though. It's not a hill workout, just strength training. Nice.

The only hill I remember in Champaign/Urbana was the overpass over I-74 (I think that's what highway it was - my memory is not so good).

I suppose you could do hill workouts on a treadmill, but it wouldn't be quite the same.

Will (http://will.fastrunningblog.com/) seemed to be able to find some hills in Champaign/Urbana, but he hasn't blogged in a while. Maybe you could send him a private message if you're interested in finding out where he ran hills.

I know you're up the road in Rantoul, and so CU would still be a trip, but it's not too far.

From Tracy on Wed, Mar 04, 2009 at 16:35:29 from 209.175.177.37

Good memory! I-74 is right.

I know of a few hills, but not in areas easy enough to transport 50 runners. We're really limited because our school is located on a highway and I've been forbidden from having my kids run on the road that our school is on! Luckily we have a big enough tract of land AND some roads are going up behind our school, so hopefully there will be some hills there!

I am going to start doing hill workouts on the treadmill just to see what the 8% grade feels like. I'm not too concerned with my own running, but I am with my XC kids' running!

The wind was crazy in Utah today, too! When it was at my back I stuck out my arms and tried to be a kite. (Not too successful.) When I ran into it I tried to be little and aerodynamic. (Also, not too successful.) When it came from either side, I just tried not to fall over.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Mar 05, 2009 at 10:25:14 from 71.229.164.25

You're funny, edrickt. I'm trying to picture you being a kite, being aerodynamic, and falling over, even though I don't know what you look like.

From edrickt on Fri, Mar 06, 2009 at 01:14:59 from 64.2.220.135

When I'm a kite I'm kind of flat. When I'm aerodynamic I'm like a little round marble and when I'm falling over I just look... well, kind of dumb.
