Easy run + 10 x 8 sec. hill sprints. Average pace: 10:38.

Weather: 17°F, 62% humidity, minimal wind, clear sky with a full moon, dry streets/sidewalks for the most part.

When I left the house to drive the kid to seminary, the moon was small and white and high in the sky. A little later, on my run, I watched it set in the west, at which point it appeared yellow and quite large. After that, I watched the sun rise in the east.

I ran the easy part of this run a little slower than I have been lately because I was tired from yesterday's run. But I've been reviewing what Hudson has to say about hill sprints lately, and so when I got to that point I really pushed it on the hill sprints, and then walked back down the hill for recovery between them. And once again, I encountered a bunch of middle-schoolers walking down my hill while I was doing the hill sprints. I guess that's what I get for running on that particular hill at that time in the morning. My paces for the hill sprints were 7:17, 7:36, 7:56, 7:44, 6:33, 7:27, 6:55, 6:35, 5:41, 6:24. Hudson says that the hill sprints should be at maximal effort but very short duration, so that's what I tried to do.

P.S. I'm tired of being cold.

Nice workout today.

I hear you about being cold. I feel like my core body temperature is 2 degrees lower, constantly. I'm so ready for Spring.

Do you know what the grade of your hill is?

Nice run today!! Great effort on the hill sprints. I was looking at the moon as I drove to work... thought of you and Sno out running. It was a cold but rather beautiful morning.

The first yard or two are not too steep and then it gets steeper, I think about a 6-8% grade. I could probably find a steeper hill to do hill sprints on, but I use this one because it's relatively steep and very close to my house. Since hill sprints always come at the end of easy runs, I like to do them close to home. There are some steeper hills right behind my office, but I don't want to end my runs there. I could drive there and start and end there and then drive home, but that would take extra time. Maybe I'll run from there some days in the summer when I can just go straight to work and won't have to come home and get kids off to school.

Well, then you've got great leg strength. Those paces are awesome for that grade. I'm really impressed with your strength.

Thanks for the compliment, Snoqualmie. Whatever leg strength I have is probably due to running hill after hill after hill, even on my easy runs. I can't get away from the hills. I suppose living in a hilly area is somewhat of a blessing in disguise.

I'm such a wimp! Maybe in the summer we'll miss these cold and dark morning workouts... but probably not.
