I've run off and on (more off than on) throughout my adult life. Most recently I started running in May of 2007.

5K PR: Colder Bolder in December 2009 in 22:50.

10k PR: Bolder Boulder in May 2009 in 48:06.13.

1/2 Marathon PR: Canyonlands Half-Marathon in March 2010 in 1:43:20.

Marathon PR: Newport (Oregon) Marathon in June 2010 in 3:42:17.

I have completed two full marathons.

Sub 3:30 marathon.

Easy run. Average pace: 10:21.

Outside temp: 39°F

I normally do the shred before my run on Wednesday mornings, but I traded the shred for an extra half hour of sleep this morning. I figure that's the best thing to do given that I still have a little soreness in my left quad and I feel a cold coming on. But I still got out and did the run, because I think an easy run actually helps with the sore quad and the deep breathing of the cool air keeps my lungs clear (or so I like to think).

I'm going slower this week than I have the last couple of weeks, but I was probably pushing too hard the last couple of weeks. The aftermath of that Saturday run slowed me down, which is probably a good thing. However, I do seem to be recovering a little bit. I've been getting just a little bit faster each day this week. On Monday, my average pace was 10:46, on Tuesday it was 10:34, and today it was 10:21. Also, I ran negative splits for the whole run today. Each mile was 10-20 seconds faster than the one before.

At the end of my run I ran into a neighbor who lives across the street and up a few houses who runs. She was just heading out. We walked down the street and talked for a little bit. She is nursing a sore knee. She says she's okay for 6 miles and then it starts hurting her. She is much more friendly than my next-door-neighbor who also runs.

I think you are approaching this with a great attitude. My experience is that it's always better to run a bit than not at all (except rest days of course) and to run more slowly than not at all. There is a huge psychological component to recovery that people don't talk about very much, imo. For me, the part of my brain that just wants to be sedentary is always saying "see? you cannot do this." You are right, easy running should help that quad, and be sure to get enough high quality protein too.

BCAA = branched chain amino acids. It's basically meat & eggs. I hope I'm not offending if you're a vegetarian. But the whole rice & beans thing doesn't have as much nutrition going for it. I get pastured raised meat, but not everyone has that available. I eat quite a lot of protein, for a runner, and I find it helps with recovery very much.

I'm not a vegetarian, and no offense taken in any case.

I've been thinking about the whole concept of being offended. I suppose there are types when I person behaves offensively on purpose, and someone takes offense at it. But I think most of the time when people are offended, no offense was intended. In this case, and even in the case where the offense was intended, the person has the choice to be offended or not. And the offense, if taken, hurts the offended person more than it hurts the person who caused the offense. So I've decided not to waste my energy on taken offense.

Your talk of meat wouldn't have offended me anyway, but I thought I'd just spout my philosophy of offense for kicks.

I think a lot of people who are easily offended have had hurts in their childhood that were never addressed. Some people just seem to have a wellspring of anger waiting to burst at the least provocation. I, on the other hand, grew up in a home where arguing was a way of life, and have had to learn to soften what I say on the internet because people don't see my face or hear my tone. It's the classic internet misunderstanding, and I'm trying to learn to tread lightly. Glad you're not easily offended! :)
