Long run.

8:45 am, 48-60° F, humidity 70-50%, wind 6 S and then calm, overcast the whole time, just a sprinkle of rain at the beginning. I'm not sure about that wind figure I got from a wunderground weather station. It felt windier to me than that. But the wind was definitely from the south, which was a pain because my big uphills were all heading south.

Marathon training is hard. I sometimes wonder why I do it.

Other people needed the cars this morning, so I ran on the roads instead of going to the trail. I ran my 10 mile loop twice, and then my 2 mile loop. I figured that way I could bail after the first loop if I felt like it. I did make a stop in my house after the first loop, used the bathroom, and had a raspberry-flavored gel and some water. I didn't carry my fuel belt with me and I guess it was warmer than I'm used to because during the second loop, I stopped in a Walgreen's just after mile 16 and got a big drink from their drinking fountain. Then 4 miles later I stopped in to a rec center and got a big drink from their drinking fountain. It takes a little extra time, but I think maybe I prefer this approach to running with that dang fuel belt.

The first 5 miles of the 10 mile loop are the hardest, particularly the 3rd and the 5th miles. And of course I had to do them twice. So on the second loop, I just told myself that if I could make it through the first 5 miles, then everything else would be easy, which is not quite true.

In about mile 8 of the 10 mile loop I run past a private Christian high school. They had a track meet going on today. It was fun to watch the pole vaulters as I ran past and I saw a lot of high school runners warming up on the road that goes past the school, which I was running on. The second time, there was a group of 3 boys and one of them was running up and down onto the grass and jumping and just looked full of energy. All of the boys were grinning. But I was too tired at that point to take much energy from it.

I'm just glad to have this run over with. If I hadn't gone the full distance today, I would have tried to do it next Saturday, and I really don't want to have to attempt 22 again next Saturday.

Incidentally, this completes mesocycle 2 in my training plan. Now I just have to survive mesocycle 3, which is only 4 weeks long.

Nice work Carolyn! Those 22 milers and a 65 mile week are hard and draining! Congrats on a strong finish to the cycle, and here's to the last one! :)

Running is HARD - especially when you run 22 miles solo. That is TRUE running! You are going to ROCK! What is your next race coming up?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Sat, Apr 17, 2010 at 22:08:05 from 24.8.167.243

I've got a 10K followed by a 5K, if I can manage to get registered for the 5K, as a training run on May 8, but the next important race is the Newport Oregon Marathon on June 5.

Great run, 22 miles is very long, I have yet to go past 20 on a training run. All this training is really going to pay off.

Great job running 22 miles today, Carolyn, especially coming off a sick week. You are in the depths of the hardest part of marathon training right now, and it is bound to make you question your senses. Way to get the run done, though, and finding good places to hydrate, too!!

From Snoqualmie on Sun, Apr 18, 2010 at 13:10:04 from 24.18.192.33

Awesome job, Carolyn!! I agree, drinking fountains rock. :) Love the track meet encounter... The last time I ran by a group of highschoolers, most of them muttered "good job" as they passed me. I was so touched. I guess it doesn't mean that much but their coach must have trained them to encourage others.

You are in the home stretch, and looking good!

Great long run! You keep getting stronger and stronger.

Great job. Marathon training does seem really hard and I only know by watching you. You are almost done! I am glad you are feeling better. I hope your cough goes away quickly or at least that it doesn't effect your running this week.

Great finish to a big week! I think the solo 22 miler can be just as mentally tough as (or maybe even tougher than) racing a marathon. The first time I did 22 miles alone I was literally crying while jog/walking the final 2 miles. Made me wonder why I train for marathons too. The good news is that now you have this experience to draw upon as you're pushing through the tough parts on June 5th.

Your pace times on the run look great. I know what you mean about feeling the drain from marathon training. You train so hard and do so much to prepare that I can only imagine the toll is takes after all you've done.

Good news it, you're on the last 1/3 of the plan...the end is near :-)

I find that carrying water isn't too bad on shorter runs, but on those long, long runs, one cup of water starts to feel as heavy as a brick. This is one reason I really like having my water boy follow me on the bike.

Awsome job with your long run!! I think your pace is fantastic!

From auntieem on Mon, Apr 19, 2010 at 11:04:43 from 24.18.77.246

Great job, Carolyn! Marathon training is hard, but you are doing so well! And, hard as it is, my "training" is probably "harder" right now. I've got a marathon and I can't even train. I don't think you want to trade, do you? Your pacing is so consistent, and I agree with you about stopping for a drink rather than carry the stupid fuel belt. Congratulations!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Apr 19, 2010 at 11:42:59 from 24.8.167.243

We've got the same marathon coming up, I think, auntieem. I was thinking about you while I was running this morning and hoping that you're doing well and are able to get back to running again soon.
