Long run. Average pace: 9:28.

Weather: 40°F, 85% humidity, wind 7 E. With just overcast and colder than it should be this time of year the whole time.

Another Saturday morning spent slogging it out on the Highline Canal Trail. For the first time since I started running this trail last Fall, there was actually a significant amount of water in the canal.

The Ogden Marathon is supposed to have fruit at some of the aid stations and I've never eaten fruit on a run before, so I decided to try it today. When I run this trail I normally go south 2.5 miles, then back to the start, then north half of the remaining distance and back. Today I went south 2.5 miles and back to the start, then north 3.5 miles and then back to the start. At that point I went to my car and had a banana. Then I did south 2.5 miles and back and north 3 miles and back again. The banana didn't seem to cause me any trouble.

I ran a so-called "easy" pace, but running that distance is never easy. My splits were pretty consistent, ranging between 9:25 and 9:40 for the most part. I tried to pick it up for a fast finish on the last mile and ran that mile in 8:49.

I've got a MP 18 mile run next Saturday, and then its tapering time.

This is my new highest mileage week ever and will likely stand for quite some time. I'm not sure I want to subject myself to marathon training again for a while.

Awesome job on the run and the week! Your training has been really impressive. You're going to have a very successful marathon, and a very well deserved break after...I'm psyched for you!

Great miles, Carolyn! I hope it has helped you feel like you've got the endurance for Ogden But even if it doesn't, the physiological response to this run is taking place at this very moment! More mitochondria, stronger cell walls, all that good stuff.

Great training run!

Another great run! Good thinking to try to mimic race conditions--glad the banana didn't bother you. Next week you might try part of an orange. Sometimes oranges make an appearance and I liked them when I did Chicago (mostly just for their thirst quenching nature).

Thanks, everyone.

Thanks for the tip about oranges, Tracy. I will try that next week. Truth be told, I really wanted cookies.

From Tracy on Sat, Apr 25, 2009 at 20:42:11 from 71.201.129.114

I hope you ate a cookie when you were done.

I know a lot of people on this blog are purists about food, but I run so that I can eat cookies and ice cream.

Solid run and solid week. Regarding subjecting yourself to marathon training, there is a great quote from Frank Shorter that sums up pretty well what I think about long, hard efforts:

"You have to forget your last marathon before you run another one. Your mind can't know what's coming."

In any case, from looking at your last few weeks, you're in great shape and should blow the marathon out of the water.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 00:38:55 from 71.229.164.25

Thanks, Nevels. When I ran my first half marathon not quite a year ago, I remember thinking that there was no way I would ever run a marathon, and yet here I am. Perhaps after I've run this one and some time has passed I'll want to do it again.

From Nevels on Mon, Apr 27, 2009 at 00:41:45 from 131.204.15.93

And I remember after running my first 50k thinking that there was no way I would ever even think about going any farther. We all know how that worked out, so you never know what you'll end up doing/running/experiencing in the distance runners' eternal quest to find our limits...
