Progress Run - 9 miles with last 15 minutes moderate. Average pace: 8:58.

Weather: 51°F, 87% humidity, wind 5 SE, partly cloudy. The early morning humidity continues.

I felt pretty good when I started this run but got tired midway through. I thought about cutting it short, but didn't. Splits for the easy part were 9:30, 9:13, 9:37, 9:02, 9:11, 9:05, 9:00, then I went for 15 minute and a few seconds at an average pace of 7:59. I was still a little ways from home at that point, so I did an addition .22 miles at 9:04 pace to get home. My right calf is a little tight. I think it's from the midfoot strike I've been working on for the last week.

We got a phone call last night asking us to go on the Pioneer Trek this summer to help with food. Our 14-year-old son will be on the Trek. Three days of walking across Wyoming in a long dress is not exactly on my marathon training plan, but that's okay. I can handle the trek physically, but I could use some spiritual growth. I hope that it will prompt my husband to prepare physically. I need to get him and our son on some kind of walking/runnning program right away so that they'll be able to handle the Trek.

Good run. Take care of those legs before your next run! Does that mean that usually you have a good mid-foot strike on your left side and you're trying to get the right side to cooperate?

The trek doesn't sound like my idea of a good time, but it does sound interesting enough. Good luck with getting hubby in shape.

No, Tracy, I'm just trying to switch from a heel strike to a mid foot strike. I don't know why it's bothering my right calf and not the left. I've noticed both calves a little tighter since I started working on the mid foot strike, but the right is particularly sore today.

Strangely enough, I midfoot strike more with my right foot than with my left. Both legs have adjusted, but it was a mess for a while there.

You'll love Trek. I haven't gone myself, but our ward went last year and everyone who went raved about how great it was.

Is it like a walk-a-thon fundraiser? And most importantly, do you get to wear the bonnet?!? I would absolutely love to see those pioneer bonnets come back into style. I'm serious. Other than losing your peripheral vision, what a great invention!

Good run today. :)

Nice run today! Hopefully it's' just some new muscles getting used to the new foot strike, and it will work it way out.

I went on a Pioneer Trek when I was a teenager. I remember it being quite fun. I think the only thing I didn't like was that it rain/sprinkled every night so we all had damp sleeping bags to sleep in. Other then that it was a great time! Good luck getting hubby and son to start a walking plan.

Nice run! Really great that you kept going even though you didn't really feel it today.

Tight calf could be from the extra "lift" towards the back that accompanies the stride with a midfoot strike. Especially as you speed up, your leg lifts more towards the back when you strike mid foot, using more calf muscle. Does that make any sense?

Do you have one of those sticks to roll your calf with?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 11:36:17 from 71.229.164.25

No, Sno, it's not a walk-a-thon fundraiser. I'm sure it costs a lot and doesn't make a cent. It's a mini recreation of the Mormon exodus from Illinois to Utah in the 1840s. My local church group does it in the summer every 4 years and kids ages 14-18 are eligible to go, so the idea is that every kid will be able to go once. That's why my 14-year-old is going. My 17-year-old is also eligible to go, but he doesn't want to go. He's not much into Mormons.

And yes, I have to wear a bonnet. I'm going to have to make them. Do you have a pattern?

Sounds like fun ... I LOVE bonnets!

From JD on Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 11:59:00 from 64.65.159.206

Maybe you can run a little on the trek. If it works out well, maybe you can start a new running fashion trend and we'll finally see more women in long dresses running marathons!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 12:22:04 from 198.241.156.7

Auntieem, yes I think that the tight calves are coming from the midfoot strike and I'll be fine once my body adjusts. I just have to strengthen those calf muscles that aren't used to be used so much. And yes, I have a stick to roll my calf with and did it this morning.

JD, the funny thing is they said that the total distance they walk on the Trek is 26 miles. So it really is a marathon, but walked over 3 days. I could run it in 4 hours, but maybe not in the long dress! I do get to wear my running shoes though, if I want. I probably will because they're nice and broken in. If I'm not too embarrased, I'll take a picture of myself in my pioneer garb to share with you all.

Carolyn,

My oldest sister is a weaver and used to do demo's at the "This is the Place" monument. She had to dress in authentic pioneer cloths, so when I went on the trek as a teenager I borrowed them from her. If I remember we only had to be dress in the pioneer clothes for one day. It's been a while I might be wrong. But I remember it was actually more comforatble to be in the dress. Good air flow around the legs vs. wearing pants. LOL

We have to wear pioneer clothing the whole time. I've got some sewing to do.

From Nevels on Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 15:14:05 from 131.204.15.93

Nice progression run, and even nicer 15 minute surge there at the end. Solid run.

From RAD on Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 15:29:08 from 67.166.99.8

Wow! I am so stinkin' impressed with how consistent and strong your runs have been this week! Nice way to finish even though your brain was telling you no, that's the mental toughness you need to make it through those long tough marathon monsters!

Enjoy the trek. I am overly jealous! I've always wanted to go, but never had the opportunity :(

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 15:37:12 from 198.241.217.15

Rachel, you'll probably go on the trek when your kids are teenagers.

From Snoqualmie on Thu, Jun 11, 2009 at 23:12:26 from 67.171.56.164

Thanks for the explanation. Sorry, I don't have a bonnet pattern, but I've definitely seen them in the fabric store.
