About 5.5 miles into my run (so as as far away from home as I get on this route) I was running on a crude dirt trail across an open space along a main road. I had just gotten across the open space to the point where the dirt trail ends and the sidewalk picks up. My left toe caught on the edge of the sidewalk and I went down hard. I lay there face down on the sidewalk for a minute, then slowly rolled over and got myself up. I looked myself over, walked a few steps, and then started running and finished the run. I had taken my gloves off at that point, and I scraped up both hands, my left knee, and my chin. I drew blood in all those places, but only a little bit. Throughout the rest of the run I periodically had shooting pains in my right hand, and at one point I tried to put my gloves back on and really had trouble getting my right glove on. I can't lift anything with my right hand now. I think I might need an x-ray. I'll call my doctor in a little while. I banged my left knee too, but I think it is ok. I'm having a hard time typing. It's the ring finger and pinky on my right hand that are really hurting, so I'm typing normally with my left hand and hunting and pecking with the index finger of my right hand and making lots of corrections.

*Update*

My hand is feeling a little better. I can make a fist now, which I couldn't do before. I think I'll hold off for a while on calling the doctor and see what happens with my hand.

Oh Carolyn...that sounds so familiar. Sasha has done that several times. Actually I think he really decided he wanted to marry me when I tenderly nursed his wounds after one bad fall he had when we were dating. Be careful. :) He usually has to wait a minute too because often he's knocked the wind out of himself and needs to get collected before getting up and going.

OMG!! That is so frightening! I hope your bones are all ok. I am so sorry to hear about this. I hope you can get in to the doc soon. Take care; I'll be thinking of you.

You took a real beating. Most people I know would roll over and then call for a ride. Amazing that you picked yourself back up and finished your work-out. As always, I'm very impressed.

Carolyn, I'm so sorry to hear about yoru fall... I've been there many many times, and it is never good. I hope your hand gets feeling better, keep us updated.

Sorry about the fall--that's terrible! I remember the last time you fell you said you had never fallen while running before.

Now you just have a lot more opportunities to fall because of all the miles!

My hat is off to you for finishing, even with those two fast miles at the end! You have grit!

Yes, Tracy, this is my second fall. I suppose some falls are inevitable given the amount that I run. There are actually many more times that I've stumbled or slipped and have nearly fallen but haven't. I should stop making such a big deal out of it.

Another spectacular run Carolyn!

I am with you on keeping upright, I can't tell you how many times I have fallen while running (I broke my wrist last year running on the trails in SLC). You aren't making a big deal out of it, you are a tough cookie for finishing your workout despite your fall!!

I often think of the guys in the Tour de France -- they fall, get stitches (without pain meds, they are not allowed) and have to ride the next day (sometimes up to 22 more days!!) - yikes.

Nice fall! Nice run! But nice fall too! Really though, good job getting back up and finishing the run as planned.

I'm glad you're okay.
