Tempo run.

5:06 am, 41°F, 56% humidity, wind 2 S.

I tried. Really I tried. But I couldn't do it. I was supposed to do 12 miles with 7 miles at 15K to 1/2M pace, which is 7:42 - 7:53. I debated which route to take this morning - one that is mostly uphill for the first half and mostly downhill for the second half, or one that is mostly downhill for the first half and mostly uphill for the second half. I went with the downhill then uphill route, which was probably the wrong choice. I thought I'd be able to run the uphill part fast if I got adequately warmed up on the downhill, but that was not the case.

I ran three miles warm-up and then started the tempo portion and couldn't hit the target pace. When I was almost at the end of the third tempo mile, my husband called me, and so I stopped and talked to him for a minute. After I got off the phone with him, I stood there for a minute more trying to catch my breath and recover. I felt like I was going to fall over. I tried to run tempo pace for two more miles, but during the fifth tempo mile, I stopped three times (and paused my watch) for a minute or so to catch my breath. At the end of the fifth tempo mile I gave it up as a bad job and just ran the rest of the way at an easy pace.

Meanwhile, my son got up on time but then wasn't sure whether he was supposed to walk to seminary, even though I told him last night that he was. He texted me to ask if he was supposed to walk, but in my travails, I didn't notice the text. He finally called about a half hour later, when I had about 2 miles to go. He wondered when I was going to get home. It was too late for him to make it to seminary by that point. I asked him if his little brother was up and he said no and that he couldn't wake him up. I had him put the phone up to the younger boy's ear and I tried to wake him up through the phone. So all in all it was not a very successful morning.

Get rid of all that mucus and you'll be back in it soon!

I still am impressed by your splits and your miles this morning! Hope the rest of the day is a good one!

From The Quiet Pirate on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 10:05:40 from 24.199.205.252

What a morning!

Your times were good. Sorry you didn't hit your goal, but you've been dealing with the cough, and that makes everything harder.

12 miles is a long morning run...you should be applauded for just getting out there and putting your miles in.

Hope your day improves :-)

From CookieLegs on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 10:06:25 from 71.36.82.238

Still a good run even though you didn't hit all your miles at the pace you wanted. It's hard coming back after being sick; I bet you are rearing to go next week!! It is amazing what those kids forget!!

From KP on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 10:14:25 from 65.208.22.25

Sleep in tomorrow and get some much needed rest!

From Metcalf Running on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 10:37:53 from 207.225.192.66

It sucks to have a bad run, but you still did an amazing job at trying to hit your pace. I'm sure when you are feeling better your runs will feel better also. Your strength is inspiring :)

From Snoqualmie on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 12:05:29 from 24.18.192.33

Please forgive me, but I am glad to see evidence that you are human. :) Better days ahead!

From JD on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 12:10:08 from 70.96.78.157

That's a lot of distractions during a run. Great job getting out at 5:00 AM and running a solid 12 miler. Wish I could do that.

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 14:18:37 from 71.219.92.128

That is one heck of a tempo run to attempt! WOW, I do not think I could do it. In fact, I am sure I could not!

I think you need to leave your cell phone at home, your kids call more than mine!!!!

Have a GREAT day!!!! Is it warming up?

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 14:22:36 from 198.241.174.15

I told him to text me when he got up so I knew that he got up on time (he overslept the other day), which he did and I actually saw that text message because I knew about what time it would come and was waiting for it.

When I do these long runs in the morning, I worry about my boys all waking up on time for school, so I carry my phone because I often call to make sure they're up. Also, I carry it in case something happens to me and I need to call someone to come pick me up. I've only done that once in more than two years.

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 14:24:16 from 71.219.92.128

I hear ya. We run and our kids are home alone (with the teenager usually in bed) so the phone is a piece of mind for sure. I have gotten really good at talking while I run, but I can not text, I have to actually stop to do that!!!

MOMS, we are always ON, 24/7!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 14:35:04 from 198.241.174.15

I can read a short text while running, but not reply. And today, I stopped to talk because I was tired and wanted a break.

And Kelli, you definitely could do that workout.

From Smooth on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 14:41:14 from 174.23.237.236

Sorry the morning was wild for you! Hey I'd say it's the effort that counts. Some runs are just not stellar especially when you've been coughing and not feeling well. Those are speedy splits with hills and texting interruptions and all.

Pardon me for asking, don't you have a base playing musician/senior that's going off to college? Is he the one going to early seminary? We, Utahns are so lucky to have release time for seminary. You're a WONDERFUL MOM!!!

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 15:32:27 from 71.219.92.128

I can read a text, but not send one, too. And, I like the breaks so when the phone rings I usually stop (unless it is my mom, that is a longer conversation and I just keep running!) I have to run through stop lights so much outside, and I try to time them so I actually get to stop. My husband tries to outrun them, I slow down praying for a red light and a BREAK!

Carolyn, you give me too much credit. i have some kind of funky ability to run those paces in a race, but I can not force myself to do them on normal runs. I need to learn how. You need to move here then we could do them together.

From RAD on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 15:42:32 from 67.172.229.125

Nice work Carolyn! I'm with the rest, that you hit some GREAT paces. They may not have been your 'goal' paces, but we all need to give ourselves credit for outstanding circumstances (myself included!). You got out and got it done, that is more than 99% of the world can say this morning.

You're also doing great on the mom front - like you said, it's a balancing act. But, I think you do it marvelously!

From KP on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 15:44:41 from 65.208.22.25

Y'all need to work on your texting skillz. Whenever I go to the gym and play on the treadmill I send texts. My ex goes there and I ALWAYS see him. Grrrrr.... So I send a text to my mom or BFF and say "guess who is at the gym!?!?" but it comes out more like "gus wh0 iz atttt the gymmm" and then they want to know what he is doing and i write back "talkig tooooo te gurrrl on th tradmil nxt tooooo me."

Like I said, y'all need my skillz.

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 15:53:34 from 71.219.92.128

THAT is how i text on a GOOD day!

From Nan on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 17:00:55 from 174.51.250.151

Oh man, maybe I'm just in a different life stage or mind-set but I never text, talk, or even bring my cell phone on a run. Whoever needs to get a hold of me can wait an hour or two and if I'm really in need of a ride home I can knock on someone's door or go somewhere to use the phone. My morning run is the only ME time I get in the whole day and I have to keep it that way. There are few other places I go when my phone stays home but running is one of those.

Just think; if you didn't have your phone your kids would just have to figure it out on their own. Either they walk, they call a friend for a ride, or they miss it. Of course there are natural consequences that would occur. But technically, its your child's problem not yours. I don't mean to be so opinionated, I'm just suggesting another option that hasn't been mentioned.

Aside from that, I think you executed a solid run under the circumstances. I hope you feel better soon!!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 18:43:32 from 24.8.167.243

Smooth, I have a bass playing musician/senior that's going off to college next year, but alas, he does not go to church nor to seminary. It's my second son, who is a sophomore, who goes to seminary.

Nan, I suppose I'm too much of a helicopter parent.

From Michelle on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 19:01:17 from 75.162.203.161

You always get so much done in the morning while I am still in bed. Sorry it was a tough run for you, but good job pushing through. I agree with snoqualmie, you don't often have "human" running experiences, you are just a machine. I hope you get feeling better and have a better morning tomorrow.

From Kelli on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 19:42:47 from 71.219.92.128

Nan, when you leave your kids at home alone for those two hours, you may change your mind!! Yours are still young, right?

From Nan on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 21:06:42 from 174.51.250.151

Yeah, my kids are just 1, 4, and 5. I'm sure I'll struggle with the same things when they get older. For now the worst that happens is huge messes (whole container of oatmeal all over the floor, chips dumped out all over the carpet, seasoning salt shaker emptied out all over the kitchen, yogurt in the hair of the younger two as my oldest laughs, meanwhile husband sleeps through it all after staying up until 5 a.m. working...might as well be leaving them unattended anyway LOL). But me taking a phone is not going to change what happens while I'm gone anyway so I just have to brace myself when I get home. Maybe if I had your ambition Carolyn, I could get up early enough to finish my run before the damage begins. Now that is a novel idea!!!

From Mark on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 23:41:43 from 173.168.88.68

What a crazy morning. Sometimes those runs just don't work out but you still got the miles in. Hopefully your family appreciates your incredible balancing act.

From Kelli on Fri, Apr 16, 2010 at 09:03:30 from 71.219.92.128

That is too funny, Nan. My husband used to work nights and I was a teacher during the day, so our kids were kind of on their own when they were little. The oldest was a aster at taking care of herself, but the next two were a MESS. My husband used to brag about being a stay at home dad and KNOWING what it was like for me, but then I pointed out that he merely was "present" during the day----he never cleaned, cooked, did laundry, any of that. He played with the kids and took naps. I used to come home to a disaster area.

I try to tell my kids that I carry the phone with me in case of emergencies---for me or for them. But they seem to think fighting over who gets the last donut is an emergency and warrants a phone call. They did call once when they had LOST my youngest (she is 5), but it was just frustrating because I was 8 miles into a 22 miles run, I had no way of getting to them to help, and I just yelled at them to find her NOW (which required waking up the 17 year old at 10:30 am, go figure) and told them not to call me back!
