Argh! My calf felt tight for the first mile, and then it started to hurt and just kept getting worse to the point where it was changing my gait. I had forgotten to bring my cell phone and I wasn't very far from home anyway, so I stopped running and walked back home. I might try the elliptical at work tomorrow morning and see if I can do that without pain in an attempt to maintain some fitness while I let this stupid thing heal.

CRAP!!! This is not good. I hope you can get a workout on the eliptical without any pain. I really hope it gets feeling better soon. I'm sure the rest will help.

Oh dear. Take it easy then. "Summer time, and the runnin is easy?" If you have to take some time off, I recommend spending some of it reading Born To Run - amazing book! Mind bending! ;)

Oh, Carolyn! So sorry its still so bad. You are very smart not to push it. Seems like eliptical is a good choice. Does ice help?

It'll heal for sure, especially with your discipline.

I second Sno's recommendation on "Born To Run" I just finished it. It's enlightening and fun to read.

From my own CRAPPY experience with calves, I really wish I had gone in to the sports med guy sooner. I found out there that the cross training I had been doing, while seeming to not hurt the calf, was hurting the calf :( I was down for 3 weeks before I went in. I had to scrap my first 1/2. After seeing him, and him BEATING the CRAP out of me, I was running in 3 days :) He did acupuncture, scraping, this handle bar thing, ultra sound, and other assorted torturous things :) Oh yeah, and when he was done, he slapped a Chinese herbal patch on. Good times :) I LOVE him :)

So Marion, are you saying I shouldn't do the elliptical tomorrow?

I've got an appointment with my GP tomorrow (all things must go through the GP) and I'm hoping she'll refer me to a sports medicine guy.

I am so sorry about the calf! Honestly, I keep questioning why we torture our bodies like this! We are all sick in the head!

Have a great weekend and I hope you are back to perfect soon.

Maybe, yes, on the skipping the eliptical??? BEG the gp to go. Can you bat your eyes ;D

Carolyn, try the ART/massage/stretching first. Or ask your GP for referral to a good sports PT. Sports med guys basically will either try to cut you or just tell you not to run. They really aren't good for repetitive stress injuries (whoops, my bias is showing, sorry). Maybe some are good, but none that I have ever seen (all two of them).

All of the orthopeds I have seen have wanted to cut me, hence the waiting so long to be seen for my calf pull. I went to a highly recommended sports med chiro that MichelleL made me go to. He is very hands on, no cut on ;)
