Easy run + 4 x 8 sec. hill sprints. Average pace: 9:28.

4:57 am, 52°F, 67% humidity, winds calm, under a waning crescent moon and Orion's belt.

I started wearing the head lamp last week. Today I broke out the reflective vest as well. It was plenty dark when I started this run. By the time I finished, it was light, but the sun wasn't really up yet. Last year I would often encounter kids walking to school down the hill where I run my hill sprints. That won't happen this year because I have to be finished with my run well before they go to school.

My toe hurt a little bit during the run, but not bad enough to keep me from running. The worst is if I go side-to-side, like on a sharp turn, but mostly I don't do that during a run.

Splits were 9:45, 9:23, 9:33, 9:12, 9:18, 9:08. Paces for the hill sprints were 6:36, 7:01, 6:21, 6:29.

Thus begins 10 months of running in the wee hours of the morning.

Yep, its that time again. Not sure how I feel about it, but I'm glad this is the last year I need to worry about it for a while.

Nice job rising early! What's awkward about this time of year is that I have the headlamp on at first, then I turn it off and I'm still wearing it -- am I just imagining those strange looks I get? "What's she wearing on her head?"

From Carolyn in Colorado on Mon, Aug 17, 2009 at 11:51:29 from 198.241.217.15

I was having that situation a lot last week, where I would turn the headlamp off half way through the run. Today it was just starting to get light when I was finished, so I think I left it on the whole time, even though it wasn't doing me much good by the end.

But who cares what the people who see us think, right?

Actually, this morning I saw a couple of women out walking wearing sweat suits - long pants and long sleeves, and I went by in my shorts and singlet with my headlamp and reflective vest and they probably thought I was loony. Oh well.

Speaking of looking funny--I caught a glimpse of myself in a store window near the end of my run. Wow did I look ridiculous. I ran out of wicking clothes so I wore a tank top that is too short (I have that problem a lot with shirts) so combined with my runningskirt being all droopy i had a full stomach showing. ON my head I had my buff. I dunno I thought I looked weird. LOL

Yes, the headlamp thing is certainly an issue. Hopefully later in the Fall and in Winter, I can have at least three runs a week in the midday, but for now several are dark. I am really dreading all the dark days that are coming!
