I went to my Active Release Technique (ART) guy yesterday afternoon and he really worked my legs. My knee is feeling okay today, but I decided to hold off running for one more day. So I went to the gym at my office and stuck needles into my eyes did the elliptical for a half hour and the bike for a half hour. I did not work terrifically hard on either one of them.

When I pointed out the location of my pain to my ART guy, he said that it was low for the IT band. And so now I'm thinking that maybe my problem wasn't the IT band, but something related to the calf soreness I acquired when I foolishly ran 4 miles in the VFFs last Friday. I think I'll try a short run tomorrow.

Muah ha ha. I laughed out loud at your beautiful and appropriate metaphor.

I think that you just described perfectly why any cause of bodily pain is so difficult to diagnose. Often what you think is the pain is symptomatic of some other imbalance/tightness.

Good luck on the short run tomorrow. Hopefully the knee cooperates!

I know exactly what knee pain you are talking about. I've had similar, yet quite a bit more subtle pain in what is probably the same spot. Because I just got over ITB issues I recognized pretty quickly that it was something different, but annoying all the same. Mine doesn't start until I'm about 4 miles in and goes away within a mile or so. I'm sure yours is much worse. Best of luck healing and getting that needle out of your eye.

I hope your knee pain improves soon so you're back on the asphalt soon.

I thought those VFF's were supposed to help stop the injuries runners have.

Have a great week.

I am glad you are feeling better. I hope your run tomorrow goes well. I had fun at lunch!

It is "sticking needles in your eye" that darn elliptical. Way to stick with it!

From auntieem on Thu, Jan 21, 2010 at 18:40:56 from 24.17.177.218

Do you think that you tried to do too much too soon on the VFFs? I can see why that might cause calf pain for sure. Its like running in spikes for the first time.

From Carolyn in Colorado on Thu, Jan 21, 2010 at 20:11:03 from 24.8.167.243

Yes, Auntie, I think it was too much too soon in the VFFs. I probably would have been fine if I had stuck to one mile or maybe two. I had only run in them two times before - a half mile the first time and a mile the second time. Four miles was a big increase.

From JD on Thu, Jan 21, 2010 at 21:03:28 from 209.183.51.63

I hope it's not serious. This break'll probably do you good, in the long run.

Funny stuff with the "stuck needles in my eyes"!

You weren't wrong when you mentioned on my blog about the elliptical!
